Carpenters 131 members are victims here too- we are losing our home where we've been for 55 years due to poor construction, and along with our partners, we are suing the general contractor for it. The general contractor didn't follow the plans and specifications for the building- it was their responsibility to do so.
· Carpenters Local 131 supports our partners' program to help tenants relocate, and we are investing our money as well to make it work for the tenants, even though we have no relocation plan for our Union yet.
· Our first responsibility is to the safety of the inhabitants of our building, which we are meeting with our partners. Our next and highest responsibility is to protect the assets of the members of Carpenters 131.
· Our members' pensions are not at risk due to this event- what is at risk are Carpenters 131's members' hard earned dues that have been invested in our share of the building- and we are going to fight to recover every penny and return to our home at 2nd and Vine- that's why we've joined in the lawsuit against the general contractor.
· We're Union Carpenters- we take pride in our work and it is shameful that our building needs to be demolished. But our Union is our people, not our building, and we will work together to recover from this experience.
